Something’s wrong. In his six years in office, this President has sent U.S. military forces on 33 missions. That’s three times as many deployments of American troops as all his predecessors since World War II combined, from Truman to Bush. Bill Clinton now even has a real “War Room.” And the U.S. is making bombing runs. So where is the anti-war crowd?

Where are the usual rent-a-mobs to chain themselves to munitions plant gates? Where are the marchers, the hunger-strikers, the caravans of VW busses loaded with slogan-chanters? Where’s Jane Fonda? Bob Dylan? Joan Baez and Richie Havens? Where’s Jesse Jackson? Where are Abbie Hoffman’s ashes?

The peace crowd has been pacified! President Strangelove has used Plan X — so they think Kosovo is a huge conflict resolution seminar. Because no greedy American interests are at stake, this war must lead to a socialist Utopia, where everyone will sit around loving each other, sucking on daisies. If that takes bombing a country to hell, so be it. Peace, man.
